Frequently asked questions

What is UN/LOCODE?

UN/LOCODE is the code list of locations used in trade and transport, published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Bills of lading, bookings and customs documents identify ports by these codes.

How do you read a port code?

A code has five characters: the first two are the ISO 3166 country code and the last three identify the place. In TRMER, TR is Turkey and MER is Mersin; NLRTM is Rotterdam and DEHAM is Hamburg.

What are the codes of the main ports in Turkey?

Some of the most used are Ambarli TRAMR, Istanbul TRIST, Mersin TRMER and Izmir TRIZM. See the Turkey page for the full list.

What if my carrier uses a different code?

Some codes are registered for another location in the current UN/LOCODE edition. For example, CNSHA and CNNGB are listed as airports, while shipping lines still use them for the ports of Shanghai and Ningbo. Follow the code your carrier uses on documents.
